The short version
Your fishing spots, paths, photos, and notes are your data. FishPin stores them in a private database tied to your account. We don't sell, share, or analyze your fishing locations.
What we collect
- Account: your email and name, and (if you sign in with Google) your Google profile photo.
- Location: your GPS position, used to show you on the map, record trails you choose to track, and fetch local weather. We only read GPS while the app is open, while you have a trail recording active (including in the background, with a persistent "Recording trail" notification on Android), or while you are actively navigating.
- Your saved data: pins, paths, trip stats, catch photos, emergency contacts, and settings — all stored on your phone and (when online) synced to your private cloud account.
- Fish-scan photos: when you tap "Scan a fish", the photo you selected is sent to Google's Gemini AI for identification and is not kept by us.
- Device identifier: a random ID generated on your phone so we can enforce one active device per account (protects your data if your login is stolen).
Who we share data with
FishPin needs a handful of external services to work. Each one only sees what it needs and nothing more:
- Private database — stores your account and synced data on secure, access-controlled servers.
- Google Sign-In — if you choose it, Google verifies your identity.
- Google Gemini AI — receives the photo when you use fish-scan, under Google's own privacy terms.
- Open-Meteo — receives your approximate location (rounded to ~500 m) when fetching weather and marine forecasts.
- Mapbox & MapTiler — receive the map coordinates needed to render map tiles.
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim — receives your search query when you look up a place.
We never pass your fishing spots, saved pins, or trip history to any of these services.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your data to anyone, ever.
- We don't show you ads.
- We don't share your fishing spots with other users.
- We don't track your location when you aren't navigating or recording a trail.
SOS messages
When you send an SOS, FishPin opens your phone's own SMS or Share sheet with the message pre-filled. The message leaves your phone through your carrier — it does not pass through our servers. We keep a small record on your phone (not in the cloud) so the 60-second cooldown and 30-minute warning still work if you force close the app.
Your rights
You can review, edit, or export your data at any time from inside the app. You can also permanently delete your account from Settings → Delete Account. Deletion wipes your pins, paths, catches, emergency contacts, and account profile from our servers and your phone. It cannot be undone.
How long we keep data
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your data is removed from our database immediately. Short-lived server logs (used to spot abuse and crashes) are kept for up to 30 days and then discarded.
Children
FishPin is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we'll remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we'll bump the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be announced in the app before they take effect.
